Reducing the NHS Child and Adolescent (CAMHS) and Young Adult Mental Health Serivce Burden

The focus of Wellbeing Associates is on Primary and Secondary Prevention. This is particularly important for young people and young adults as there are windows of opportunity to prevent unnecessary emotional distress and mental health problems when evidence-based approaches are used, as early as possible. There are also neurodivergent families and families with a history of mental health or addiction who have a far higher incidence of difficulties that may require earlier assessment than other groups.

For example, ADHD and Autism are not mental health problems, they are neurodevelopmental (medical) conditions as part of a person’s natural development and have continued to play a fundamental role in benefiting our human evolution. However if this population is not assessed, diagnosed and provided with the support and understanding that they require from their environment (school, parents and other caregivers), then they are at significantly increased risk of unnecessary mental health problems. This includes anxiety and depressive disorders, school avoidance, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, academic failure, turbulent experiences of friendships and their peer groups, vulnerable to engaging in anti-social behaviours and also addiction.

Initial Assessments are Doctor Led

Another focus is the individualised and thorough assessment of each young person or adult by a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. This means a medical doctor who has been medically trained first, and then has gone on to further extensive training in psychiatry and psychology as part of evidence based medicine and research. This approach enables a broad assessment that considers the medical, psychiatric, psychological and social influences relating to the presentation and the differential diagnosis. It is possible to reach an actual diagnosis where appropriate and provide an evidence based care plan that involvies the right multidisciplinary team. There is also the advantage of the doctor being able to prescribe medication based treatments where indicated without delays, alongside any other intervention.

Post Diagnostic Care

This is often a neglected area within CAMHS due to the high volume of assessments required and the ‘fire fighting’ taking place by the hard working dedicated NHS staff. The system including the staff are often overwhelmed by acute crisis care, alongside their expanding routine waiting lists. Our emphasis is on holistic care and to focus on the system (family, school, university or employer) around the young person or adult as much as possible. We provide the following:
